Writer Joshua Becker explains how he came to grips with the finite nature of our resources. He started, four years ago, by getting rid of unessential possessions, while knowing that he did not have the money to indulge in crass consumerism anymore. He came to understand that sometimes we own our possessions, and sometimes our possessions own us. He also realized that money, time, energy, attention, physical space, relationships and mental capacity are all only available in finite quantities. By lessening the amount of possessions in his life, he was freeing himself. Focusing on our limits helps us to avoid falling deeper into debt, letting time slip away, wasting energy and more negative consequences.
